Success story — UK x Ukraine

Gary and Elena

The thought of, in my mid-50s, marrying a beautiful, traditional woman 17 years younger and starting a family seemed a pipe dream. Yet, here we are, happily married (albeit a bit rocky at times to be honest) with our little girl, Dasha.

Gary is a policeman from London. He was in his mid-fifties when he decided that the life he wanted — a wife, and a child — was still worth going after, after what he describes as decades of dating in the UK that had left him without much hope of it.

He and Elena are married and have a daughter, Dasha. In his own words, below.

Gary & Elena — UK x Ukraine

Where it began

“Wow! Where do I even begin? The thought of, in my mid-50s, marrying a beautiful, traditional woman 17 years younger and starting a family seemed a pipe dream. Yet, here we are, happily married (albeit a bit rocky at times to be honest) with our little girl, Dasha.”

“It all began with Joe's webinar, showing me that old-fashioned chivalry isn't dead and there are still women in this world who still put family first, like they did back in my parents' day.”

What made him act

“The real catalyst for me to take the first step was the part of the webinar where he showed videos of other clients that had actually pulled it off. Hearing their stories rekindled the hope I had lost enduring decades of horrific dating experiences in the UK and gave me the nudge I needed to go after my dreams.”

Gary's leap of faith led to marriage, a daughter, and a new chapter he once thought was impossible.

It really is a Hollywood story to my mind. Carrie, Elena was your free Skype call with us. Yeah? Absolutely. Yeah. I actually only spoke to one person and only selected one person. That's so exciting. I mean, this year, there's you and Peter and Ola. It was the first introduction. NARRages. They're they're headed to the altar soon. So please tell me how did that happen? For me, it was, following the coaching call that I had with, with Luba, to to pick, my, my ladies from the database. And, of course, yeah, the offer was, you you picked ten. So I picked ten, but really was only interested in one. And, I think seven, yeah, seven or eight of ten said, yes. We we would be happy, to to meet with this man.

But, I was, of course, looking for Elena twelve thirty six. She was then to, to say yes. And, I had a conversation with Looper, actually, and and Luba said to me, we we think she would be a good match for you. We we would recommend that actually we are glad you chose her because we think that the be good good match for you. So, I guess, everything was sort of pointing at us really having that initial date, which we did. And so, actually, Yeah. I was a light service user, Joe. I I just chose the one and it went from there. A main user, Gary chose me and was waiting for my reply. And, I did believe him and I knew it's Yes. We we met each other on only each other. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Nobody else. Yeah.

Yes. You know, I set it at the wedding, but, as soon as I saw her on the screen, when you know, you know, and, for me, I I sort of knew at that point. So our our chat which supposed to be for thirty minutes when way past an hour. So, we we established a a really good rapport during that, that initial meeting. And, you know, I found Elaine really, really interesting, as well as, obviously, very, very lovely. And, She said some, you know, some, shared some personal things with me, that that gave me the feeling that she was serious, you know, and and she was interested in in in in taking it further. So so for me, that that was the side of it really was that, was that video date? Yeah. Third of September.

Actually, my first, impression was when I saw photo of Gary in, my post email and, I like it. I like him, and I agreed, for this, video dating. I when I saw him, I saw he said he was between, you know, nervous, worried, and he had a lease of, questions to ask me. And for me, it was, you know, a bit it was funny, but, at the same way it was about his serious intention that he prepared for this meeting. And, yes, I liked him very much. Of course, we understood that it's just virtual communication. And, because of, COVID and quarantine restrictions, we had to wait for a long time, to see personally each other. And when we finally met in May, Actually, we we did like. We did like. So it was the beginning of our story.

Yeah. True. True. Pretty soon after Joe, to be honest, we we started to exchanging, text messages initially on Viber and then WhatsApp. Lots of photos. And just generally building a relationship. Although the distance was there, we we had very frequent contact, which grew. And then we got into a bit of a routine, didn't we? Because at at the end of your working day, you, you know, we both work full time. At the end of the working day, you know, I would like to relax and and sometimes take a bath, but I didn't see anything of course. It was, just the face, you know, but, that was a favorite time for us. You know, our little chap in the bath. So the end would be in the bath, speaking to me, just a head shot.

And, yeah, and sometimes they would last an hour, an hour and a half. We would talk about all sorts of things, you know, some serious, some funny, some lights, and deep. And it just developed really over over the course of the next, well, eight months, I guess, before From September, the from the beginning of September till the end of May, now. Yes. So So we maintained it, you know, almost nine months. It was, you know, at times, it it could be a bit of a challenge because, you know, sometimes you get the odd misunderstanding or the odd perception about things, and, you know, sometimes cults are plays a part in that, but I think, you know, I think the strong thing about us is that we always talked about it.

So if we said something we didn't quite stand. Yeah. Or if we said something that we thought, I'm not sure what he or she means about that. Mhmm. We we explained and we spent time discussing it with each other to say, okay. Now I understand why you said it like that, or now I understand. Because you do get those little misunderstandings particularly in that time as we haven't even met. So you're still trying to find out about someone and get to know someone without actually having met them in person. It it was the only option for us, but it it worked well for us in terms of us getting to know each other. Think, you know? Yes. Yeah. Yes. More more difficulties, more situations that we had to solve, more positive solutions, for us as for the couple and, more reassurance that every single as well, it was much Yeah.

Not not easy, but very, in very interesting way. But but what it did mean, didn't it? Because when we did meet, didn't made them, we already knew each other, you know, in terms of our the thoughts that we We thought we knew. Yeah. That's true. We'll cover that later. Actually, yes. I think the whole marriage life is learning about each other. So now we are at the very start. It's the very beginning. Yes. And of course, our personal meetings first in May. Second time when Gary came to Keith in June, we celebrated his birthday. We spent my birthday. It was fantastic. We we went to Burazan in, south of Kiev, and, such an amazing experience. We had a family barbecue and, I met, obviously, I'd met, Liam parents before, but it was it was great to meet other members, our close friends and family.

And that's one thing I'll say is the hospitality here is absolutely amazing. So can I ask about that magic first trip first three day trip? And I understood you proposed Gary. You know, I landed and I, you know, the experience for me was quite surreal because I hadn't done anything like this before. So for me, it was sitting on the airplane, waking the communication. How are we going to greet? You know, do we embrace? Do we kiss? Do we shake hands? You know, it was like, all of these things were like, how are we gonna do this? Thanks, Sylvia, and a full itinerary for the weekend. It was just you know, a magical weekend and and the ballet was on a Sunday evening. Never been the one before always wanted to experience one and, and it was amazing.

What we really wanna know is how did you pop the question? And what happened? Well, it it was it was sort of traditional because, getting to Noliana as I did. You know, I know that she's very strong in family values. She's very close to her parents. So I wanted it to do the old fashioned way. I wanted to speak with her father before I asked, before I asked him. So actually the way it it worked was very well. Len had already arranged a family meal for the Saturday evening. So we went to their house in in Kiev, and I met her mom and dad and, little baby Dasha, and also, other members of the family were there. We had a fantastic meal as is always the case. That I experienced. But I just said, you know, that, I I was very serious that, you know, we we were I believe we received support each other, and there was a prospector of a future.

So what would they feel if I did this? You know? And there was some conversation between her mom and dad, which I didn't really understand. But, you know, he said, yes, say, I we would support this. So, I I popped the question, in the lounge of a family home with their parents looking on. And, she did pause for a short period, a little period of time to think And, she said yes. And, I I took the red and, there it is. So, Lindsey, can I ask you, what how did you feel at that moment when he bought the threshold? I was really surprised. I think I I'm not sure I was ready, you know, for proposition that evening because it was the very first, meeting, of us. And, before they before Gary asked me.

Are you expecting that, I would make you a proposition? I said him yes and no. So it's it's up to you because you make the proposition and, yes, I can expect because we are, you know, even in a virtual relationship, but for nine months. And no, because it's only first meeting, and maybe we should know each other more. Yeah. Thanks the very next day. In the evening, I got to the proposition, and I said, oh, understood. Okay. That's why you ask at me. So you already got the ring in your pocket, you know, or in your luggage. Just he was preparing. Of course, it's a very serious step, you know, and, I appreciate it very much that, Gary decided to do this because it's, you know, I did have the experience before, to be married.

He didn't. And it's very responsible to to go, to a family, you know, because the woman with a child, it's much more responsibilities. It's just a single woman who who has never been married before. So I do appreciate, and I did appreciate everything. And he passed such a long distance to come, to Ukraine, yes, to everything new. He he has never been here before. And, touch to this culture, new culture for him, totally new language. And, I say my husband is very brave. Sometimes, too brave. Yes. But I'm I'm the same. That's why my baby are together. And you have beautiful dasha? Yeah. You do. If you could tell us that story, how how did this beautiful little girl come into the picture? You adopted her?

Yes. We'd love to hear, you know, that story about how that happened and has it brought you two together? Okay. Actually, I, made the decision to adopt a child before we met each other with Gary. And, it was a very long process because of, again, quarantine and COVID. And, there were pauses, you know, in this process. So by the beginning of September, as we had meeting with Gary sort of September, I think the end of August. I was shown, the picture of my future daughter, but I haven't seen her personally at, by this moment before. Yes. And, actually, it was important, you know, when met with Gary Vidor. I wanted to be honest and direct at the very beginning, so I told him about the plans because I wasn't going to change my plans.

Otherwise, we wouldn't sit here, you know, together. If he wouldn't accept this, it was his right. And, in couple days I met her. And, again, it was a long process of waiting for the court date that took me three months, and I had to combine my work attending her every day. It was, our the city. And, you know, when she in couple months, I heard her first mama Yes. And in December, I brought her home. So, yes, it was, you know, it's very personal. It's a very private story, but, I I'm ready to share this because, I'm sure it's maybe the best decision in my in my life that I've met. You know, our conversations with Gary, the style of conversations have changed, after I brought Russia because, you know, before, we expected that it would be different to find time to communicate, but it was extremely difficult and sometimes impossible.

And it also made some conflict between us, that he wanted more attention. I couldn't give him that is that? Yes. And, It's hard to know when you have two crying babies, right? Who to give a teacher? Absolutely, you know, when one baby is one year old and another is, a bit more one and fifty plus. Yes. And, sometimes it was very exhausting, you know, parts of life. Yeah. And by the time when Gary arrived, he could already meet Dasha, you know, and, see how we communicate eight, and it was totally new experience for him. I remember, the second time when you arrived, we went to the play yard altogether, and he was sitting in the sand box with her, you know, playing with stone and it was looking, you know, so amazing because it was a very new experience of a new father and new dot tar.

And for you, Gary, how how was it for you? You know, getting a two for one. You know? Yeah. Wife with a newly adopted child. Is that for you? Yeah. I I said, I said as much to to Leanna previously that, obviously, when I when I selected to to meet with her, you know, she was a a single woman with with no child, but I I really appreciated the honesty. During that initial video date where where she volunteered this this information for me, which is very personal to her that she was tending to adopt. And, you know, it's quite coincidental, but I'd gone through a similar thought process myself previously. So I was actually quite positive immediately positive thinking, oh, okay. So actually, yeah, there's an opportunity to to to have a family here, pretty much from the get go.

And actually, if I can say, you know, a family without any strings really because, you know, with, Dasha coming into your life in the way that she did, there was an opportunity for me, I think, to to be a a part of that and to actually be a, you know, a real positive influence or or how her life would develop. So I was immediately positive when when Diana mentioned it to me, but the more I thought about it, the the more positive, you know, I became. So I was I was very happy about it. The whole package. Of course, the reality is, is a little bit more of a challenge because, you know, I don't have any children. It's a challenge, but it's also very rewarding. You know, I I see little moments of magic You know, when she calls me, or she comes to me, you know, little moments of success, I was explaining him this morning how I managed to persuade her to put her sweater on because she was very resistant to it, but without any struggle I achieved in.

So you know, I believe that relationship is building. We are from different countries, but it's not, like, a story of Cinderella, you know, and Prince. Of course not. So, no. Do you say so? No. No. I'm joking. I'm joking. I'm joking. Yeah. So, it's it's also very interesting to know the culture of each other, to understand, and to accept some differences that we have and it's very important, you know, to to respect each other, despite some misunderstanding. So it's also our part of our story. And I think of every international pop couple. Yeah. We know we're on a journey. Yeah. Yeah. We're at the very start of the journey. Yes. You know, what advice could could you give us then? You know, you you're you're much more experienced than, in, you know, you matters Ukraine and your marriage to honor, We are at the start, you know?

What could you what could you say to us? Well, nothing like putting me on the spot, Gare. But You know, for me, the institution of marriage, it's, first and foremost, it's a commitment, you know. And I really respect, you know, Elena, you were so honest, you know, Gary proposed to you and then you're like, this is kind of quick. But let me see. If you're man enough, you think you can handle me and a new baby girl? I give you a chance. You know, you've committed to each other, you're mature adults and you understand that marriage isn't just about love, because love is up and down. Love is an emotion. And there are times in marriage, I understand that, you know, you really think, you question love, but you're committed to each other, you're committed the process, building the family on top of the normal challenges of marriage, which it's not easy in any country.

Right? You have language while you speak perfect English, so that's not a problem. Yeah. But you have cultural differences mindset differences because very different worlds we come from. It's almost like matching a venetian from Venus and a Martian, you know, and say, okay. Happily ever after now. You have to be so committed to getting to know each other, to to, you know, to to fitting together. You know? And I and I can share Anna and I, you know, when we got married, we were one year getting to know a other. And yet, you know, the biggest fight we've ever had was the day after getting married. My advice to anyone to to use is is, you know, hang in there. It's not always rainbows and angels.

You know, in fairy dust. It's about the commitment. And, you have a beautiful daughter to keep to bond you, you know, which is very powerful. I think of our marriage, and, you know, our daughters, I love them already so much. A huge powerful glue that keeps us together and gives us strength to make it through the, you know, the dips because marriage is mountains and valleys. Mountains and valleys. So so you asked. There you have it. Yes. Thank you. Good experiencing some of that already. You know, because I think the the public sees Anne and I, and a lot of people think it's the perfect marriage, and we don't have any challenges. But No. The truth is we do have challenges. Oh, it's life. And, you know, age gap, adds to that too.

You just have But again, it comes back to that commitment, you know, that commitment. And I I really, like, I love Anna more now than I did the day we got married. And I and as our daughters, and I find it just it grows. It grows and grows. And if you stick in there. Mhmm. Is that right? I I see you guys have, you know, a beautiful love story. A daughter, to hold on to. And, you know, my my wish and my prayer for you is that you will just, you know, be easy going about it. You know, it's it's it's a new it's it's like a new a new child, your marriage, and you need to just like the child that needs to be cared for. And when you newer shit over the years, it will grow and grow and grow and I feel your love will grow for each other as it does.

Thank you, Judge. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. It's my pleasure, you know, being able to sit here have a spot of tea, some champagne, and talk about your magical day and your magical moment. And, yeah, I wish you all the best. As you move to UK and begin, your life together. Yes. Thank you. We are going to do this this room. Yes.

What Gary would tell someone in the same position

What moved him was not a promise about results. It was watching people who had been where he was describe what they did about it — which is the only reason this page exists in the form it does, video and all.

Gary's experience is his own. It is not a forecast, and nothing here should be read as a claim about what is typical.
